Chapter 7 - Elena’s Real Handwriting

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Victor had dozens of Elena’s handwritten notes.

Birthday cards.

Grocery lists.

Letters.

One angry message she once taped to his steering wheel because he forgot dinner.

Jonathan gathered samples.

A forensic document examiner reviewed Marina’s note.

The preliminary conclusion came within hours.

The signature was likely traced.

Not naturally written.

The pressure pattern was wrong.

The ink differed from the body text.

Marina’s supposed proof was collapsing.

But Victor wanted more.

He wanted Elena’s actual medical records.

Saint Matthew’s had already begun an internal review.

By Christmas afternoon, the hospital located archived nursing notes.

At 1:38 a.m., Elena arrived in active labor.

At 2:08, Baby A—male.

At 2:12, Baby B—female.

At 2:19, Elena developed severe complications.

At 2:34, Baby A was transferred.

But one note had been crossed out.

Jonathan requested the underlying scan.

The original writing remained faintly visible.

Father notified?

YES — ATTEMPTED.

Victor frowned.

“I was never called.”

Hospital phone logs showed three calls to Victor’s private number between 2:16 and 2:28.

None reached him.

Instead, all were forwarded.

To another number.

Jonathan traced it.

A corporate line belonging to Marina.

Victor slowly sat down.

Nine months earlier, Marina had arranged Victor’s communications while he attended an out-of-state negotiation.

She told him his secure phone required an emergency network update.

He had believed her.

For ninety minutes, his calls were forwarded.

Exactly during Elena’s delivery.

Victor looked at the records.

“She knew when Elena went into labor.”

Nathan Cole found the answer.

A hospital foundation employee had texted Marina at 1:44 a.m.

ELENA M. ADMITTED. TWINS. URGENT.

Marina had paid that employee repeatedly through a consulting company.

Victor’s anger became ice.

Then the hospital discovered a voicemail backup.

One outgoing message from Elena’s room.

The call failed to reach Victor.

But the system preserved the recording.

Elena’s exhausted voice filled the library.

“Victor… it’s Elena. They’re early. There are two. A boy and a girl.”

Victor closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

“I know we fought. I don’t care anymore. Please come.”

A pause.

Then:

“And if anybody tells you I don’t want you here, they’re lying.”

Victor’s eyes opened.

Marina stepped backward.

Elena had known.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

Victor looked at Marina.

“You heard this.”

“No.”

“Your phone received the forwarded call.”

“No.”

Jonathan checked the logs.

The message had been accessed.

At 2:31 a.m.

From Marina’s device.

Victor said nothing.

He simply played Elena’s final sentence again.

“If anybody tells you I don’t want you here, they’re lying.”

Marina’s face finally cracked.
