Chapter 14 - The Recording Marina Couldn’t Erase

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The lullaby lasted ninety-two seconds.
Victor listened six times.
Elena’s voice was weak but warm.
Halfway through, she stopped singing.
Then spoke.
“Gabriel, your daddy is going to pretend he knows everything.”
Victor laughed through tears.
Rebecca smiled.
Elena continued.
“He doesn’t.”
A pause.
“But he loves harder than anybody I know.”
Victor looked down.
Then Elena addressed Rose.
“My Rosie girl, don’t let your brother boss you around because he’s four minutes older.”
Victor smiled.
Finally:
“And both of you… if I’m not there, find each other.”
The recording ended.
Victor remained silent for a long time.
Marina had separated them.
But she had kept copies of the recording with Gabriel’s belongings because she believed it was harmless.
Another mistake.
The recording established Elena knew both babies were alive after birth.
That mattered legally too.
The prosecution added it to the evidence file.
Meanwhile, Gabriel’s transition proceeded slowly.
Rebecca moved temporarily into the Bellini guesthouse.
Victor insisted.
“You’re the only mother figure he remembers.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“I’m not his mother.”
“No.”
Victor looked toward Gabriel.
“But you’re important.”
Rose and Gabriel reacted to each other almost immediately.
At first, Rose stole his toy.
Gabriel screamed.
Then he stole it back.
Rose screamed louder.
Victor stared.
Rebecca laughed.
“Twins.”
Within days, they began crawling after each other.
No trust document could measure that.
No birth order mattered.
Then the press discovered the story.
Reporters gathered outside the estate.
Headlines appeared.
SECRET BELLINI CHILD.
HIDDEN HEIR.
MAFIA BOSS’S LOST SON.
Victor hated every one.
Especially “heir.”
He issued one statement through counsel:
Both children are minors. Their privacy will be protected.
Nothing else.
Marina’s attorney attempted to use the publicity.
He claimed Victor was exploiting Gabriel’s identity to damage Marina.
Then prosecutors released none of the sealed evidence but confirmed an active case involving falsified documents and concealed parentage.
The narrative changed.
Marina’s allies began disappearing.
Board members resigned from companies associated with her.
Her charitable foundation suspended her.
Her financial accounts were frozen.
The glamorous future she had planned collapsed piece by piece.
Then one person came forward voluntarily.
Dr. Samuel Kerr.
The physician who signed Gabriel’s death certificate.
He had been living in Arizona.
Retired.
Ill.
And guilty.
He contacted prosecutors after seeing the headlines.
His first words during the recorded interview were simple:
“I signed a death certificate for a baby who was alive.”
Victor watched the recording with Jonathan.
Neither spoke.
Kerr continued.
“And Marina paid me to do it.”
