Chapter 11 - The Trust Froze at 3:17 P.M.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Rachel did not waste one minute.
The duplicate original was authenticated by the notary.
Julia confirmed execution.
At 2:41 p.m., formal notice went to every trust administrator and bank.
At 3:17—
Grant Mercer’s authority froze.
Every trust-controlled account required independent approval.
No transfers.
No restructuring.
No new investment agreements.
No access to Lily’s voting proxy.
Grant’s attorneys immediately challenged the activation.
Rachel expected that.
Then North River Capital attempted to cancel two pending transactions.
Too late.
The forensic review had already captured them.
One involved the sale of a Valero warehouse complex at forty percent below independent valuation.
The buyer?
A North River subsidiary.
The difference would have created millions in profit outside the family.
Dominic stared at the documents.
“He was selling assets to himself.”
“Effectively,” Rachel said.
Grant’s scheme was no longer just suspicious fees.
It was systematic self-dealing.
Celeste’s promised board seat now made sense.
She was supposed to supply Lily’s voting power.
Grant supplied the structure.
North River supplied the buyers.
Everyone won.
Except Lily.
And eventually Dominic.
Then the temporary guardianship hearing arrived faster than expected.
Celeste had not withdrawn her petition.
Dominic looked at Rachel.
“She still wants custody?”
“Her attorney says the petition is now about Lily’s safety.”
Dominic laughed once.
Rachel did not.
“They have video of you physically confronting Celeste.”
“The edited video?”
“They filed it before we could file the full version.”
Dominic’s face hardened.
“When’s the hearing?”
“Tomorrow morning.”
Celeste was still trying.
Maybe because Grant had promised her something.
Maybe because she believed custody gave her leverage.
Maybe because once greed had driven someone this far, retreat felt like admitting everything.
Dominic spent the evening with Lily.
No lawyers.
No trust papers.
He fed her mashed carrots.
Lily got most of them on his shirt.
Hannah laughed.
Dominic looked down.
“I own other shirts.”
Lily slapped the tray happily.
For ten minutes, his world became simple.
Then his phone buzzed.
Rachel.
She had received Celeste’s court exhibits.
Photographs of Dominic shouting.
A clip of him dumping dog food over her.
Statements describing him as “intimidating.”
One declaration came from Grant.
Dominic read it twice.
Grant claimed Dominic had become increasingly volatile after Sofia’s death.
That hurt more than he expected.
Grant had stood beside him at the funeral.
Held his shoulder.
Told him to lean on family.
Now those moments had become material for an affidavit.
Then Rachel turned to the final page.
“Dominic.”
“What?”
“They’re requesting a temporary neutral placement for Lily until the court reviews your fitness.”
He stared at her.
“Placement where?”
Rachel’s expression hardened.
“With Celeste.”
Dominic looked toward his daughter.
Lily was chewing the corner of a soft toy.
Completely unaware that adults were trying to turn her into voting power.
His hands tightened.
Then he deliberately relaxed them.
That was what they wanted.
Anger.
A scene.
A mistake.
He kissed Lily’s head.
“They’re not getting one.”
