Chapter 15 - The Man Dominic Called Uncle

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Grant appeared in court in a dark suit.
For a moment, he looked exactly as he had at family dinners for decades.
Calm.
Polished.
Respectable.
Dominic hated how familiar he looked.
Grant had taught him to drive.
Attended his graduation.
Stood beside his father at weddings and funerals.
Lily might one day know him only as the man accused of trying to use her for financial control.
That contrast hurt.
The court addressed trust matters first.
The evidence was overwhelming enough for immediate civil action.
Grant was removed as trustee.
Permanently.
His authority over every Valero-related trust ended.
A neutral institutional trustee replaced him.
Independent audits became mandatory.
Transactions involving family insiders required outside review.
No guardian—not even Dominic—could unilaterally use Lily’s voting rights for related-party deals.
Dominic supported every restriction.
One board member looked surprised.
“You’re giving up control.”
Dominic answered—
“I’m removing temptation.”
Grant stared at him across the room.
Later, during a recess, Grant asked to speak privately.
Rachel refused privacy.
So the conversation happened with attorneys present.
Grant looked at Dominic.
“I helped build what your family has.”
Dominic nodded.
“You did.”
“You think your father understood these businesses?”
“Not all of them.”
“I kept them alive.”
“Yes.”
Grant seemed almost relieved.
Finally, recognition.
Then Dominic continued—
“And somewhere along the way, you decided keeping them alive meant they belonged to you.”
Grant’s face hardened.
“I deserved more.”
“You were paid more than most people earn in ten lifetimes.”
“It wasn’t about salary.”
“I know.”
Dominic looked at him.
“It was about being the man behind the throne.”
Grant flinched.
“You sound like Sofia.”
“Good.”
That hurt him more.
Grant leaned forward.
“Sofia wanted to tear apart a structure she didn’t understand.”
“She understood it well enough to catch you.”
Silence.
Then Grant said—
“I never wanted Lily hurt.”
Dominic’s voice became ice.
“You used her.”
“I used Celeste.”
“To use Lily.”
Grant looked away.
Dominic stepped closer.
“You don’t get to hide behind layers.”
Grant whispered—
“I thought you were becoming like your father.”
Dominic almost smiled.
“You tried to frame me as violent by threatening my baby.”
“Yes.”
Grant looked at him.
“And you didn’t become him.”
That was not an apology.
But it revealed something.
Grant had expected Dominic to respond with uncontrolled force.
Perhaps because that was the version of power Grant understood.
Dominic did not give it to him.
“I’m going back to my daughter.”
Grant’s face changed.
“Dominic—”
He stopped at the door.
“You lost me when you decided she was leverage.”
Then he walked away.
Outside, Rachel handed him an updated criminal filing.
Grant faced charges related to fraud, conspiracy, falsification, and financial misconduct.
Celeste faced separate charges involving child endangerment, conspiracy, fraud-related conduct, and false court filings.
The process would take months.
Maybe longer.
But the family could finally move forward without waiting for a hidden vote.
Then Hannah called.
“Mr. Valero?”
“What?”
“Lily said something.”
Dominic smiled.
“She’s eight months old.”
Hannah laughed.
“Not words.”
“What happened?”
“She crawled.”
Dominic stopped in the courthouse hallway.
“You’re joking.”
“Three steps. Well… crawl-steps.”
He started walking faster.
Rachel called after him.
“Where are you going?”
“My daughter moved three feet.”
“You’re in the middle of—”
“Reschedule civilization.”
And for the first time in weeks, Dominic ran toward something joyful.
May you like
👉 Grant and Celeste were finally facing consequences, but Dominic was beginning to understand that Lily’s childhood could not be allowed to become nothing but evidence in their case.
