Chapter 19 - The First Birthday

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Lily’s first birthday arrived quietly.

Dominic refused the giant gala his staff proposed.

“No ballroom.”

“Guest count?”

“Small.”

“How small?”

“People she actually knows.”

That reduced the number dramatically.

Hannah.

Rachel.

Julia.

A few relatives Dominic trusted.

Some of Sofia’s closest friends.

No investors.

No board members who only appeared when money was involved.

The cake was pale pink.

Lily destroyed it within minutes.

Dominic watched frosting land on the floor.

Hannah looked at him.

“You okay?”

“I’ve survived worse dinners.”

She laughed.

At noon, Lily’s Legacy Trust transition became effective.

Fifty-one percent beneficial interest.

Protected under independent institutional management.

Dominic remained her father and legal guardian.

But the reformed trust required outside approval for major transactions.

No Celeste could ever gain control through a single guardianship order.

No Grant could quietly redirect funds.

Dominic himself could not use Lily’s assets as his own.

Exactly as it should be.

Rachel handed him the final confirmation.

“Done.”

Dominic glanced at it.

Then put it aside.

Lily was trying to feed cake to her stuffed rabbit.

Far more urgent.

Julia approached with Sofia’s sealed letter for Lily.

“Still want me to hold it?”

“Yes.”

“Until when?”

Dominic looked at his daughter.

“When she can understand it without feeling responsible for what adults did.”

Julia nodded.

Sofia’s letter would wait.

So would Celeste’s.

So would the court records.

Lily would have the truth.

But not before she had a childhood.

That afternoon, Dominic carried her to Sofia’s grave.

Only him and Lily.

He placed a small flower beside the stone.

Lily patted the engraving.

Dominic whispered—

“She did it.”

He looked down at his daughter.

“Your mom protected you.”

Lily babbled something meaningless.

Dominic smiled.

“I agree.”

The wind moved gently through the cemetery trees.

For the first time since Sofia’s death, Dominic did not feel like he had failed her.

He had missed the warning.

Yes.

Trusted the wrong man.

Yes.

But when the trap finally closed around Lily, he had chosen evidence instead of vengeance.

Protection instead of pride.

And change instead of repeating the habits of the men before him.

That evening, they returned home.

Dominic carried Lily through the nursery doorway.

He stopped.

The old camera was gone.

So was the silver dog bowl.

The room had been completely redone.

Warm lamps.

Soft toys.

Photographs of Sofia.

Nothing connected to the night Celeste tried to turn his daughter into leverage.

Then Hannah pointed toward the wall.

One empty frame.

“For what?”

She smiled.

“Tomorrow.”

A photographer was coming.

Dominic frowned.

“Why?”

“Because Lily needs a picture with her dad.”

Dominic looked down.

Lily rested her head against his chest.

He smiled.

“Yeah.”

“She does.”

👉 Lily’s fortune was finally safe, but Dominic’s greatest inheritance from Sofia had never been written into any trust—it was the chance to become the father Lily deserved.
