Chapter 12 - The Judge Watched Everything

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The courtroom monitor showed Celeste’s version first.
Dominic entering.
Dominic grabbing her wrist.
The bowl over her gown.
Her falling into the chair.
Then the clip ended.
Celeste’s attorney spoke gently.
“My client feared Mr. Valero’s temper.”
Dominic said nothing.
Rachel stood.
“Your Honor, we request permission to play the complete recording.”
Celeste’s attorney objected.
Rachel held up the memory card.
“The petitioner omitted the preceding eighteen minutes.”
The judge looked at Celeste.
Then at the screen.
“Play it.”
The room became quiet.
Celeste repositioned the camera.
The burner phone.
The dog food.
Her conversation.
“He’s downstairs.”
Then the male voice.
“Make him touch you.”
Celeste shifted in her chair.
The judge’s expression changed.
“The petition is already filed.”
Then—
“The child is the leverage, not the objective.”
A stunned silence filled the room.
The video continued.
Dominic entered.
This time, everyone saw why.
His daughter was in danger of being fed something intended as deliberate humiliation.
He stopped the spoon.
Moved Lily away.
Confronted Celeste.
The judge watched the entire scene.
When it ended, she turned toward Celeste’s attorney.
“Did your client give you the full footage?”
The attorney’s silence answered first.
“No, Your Honor.”
The judge removed her glasses.
Then Rachel introduced the petition’s filing time.
10:06 a.m.
Hours before the staged incident.
Celeste’s attorney requested a recess.
Denied.
Rachel presented the burner-phone messages.
The guardianship-linked trust documents.
Celeste’s proposed board seat.
Her payments from C.V. Advisory.
Then Celeste suddenly spoke.
“I didn’t plan the financial part.”
Her attorney closed his eyes.
The judge stared at her.
“Mrs. Valero, do not speak over your counsel.”
Celeste kept going.
“Grant told me Dominic would scare the court into giving me temporary custody.”
Grant’s lawyer stood.
“Objection—”
The judge cut him off.
“This is not a trial against Mr. Mercer.”
Then she looked at Celeste.
“But you have just made a statement your attorney may wish you had not.”
The emergency guardianship petition was denied.
Completely.
The judge further ordered that Celeste have no unsupervised contact with Lily while the alleged staging and treatment of the infant were investigated.
Dominic closed his eyes.
For the first time in days, air returned to his lungs.
Lily stayed with him.
But when he stepped outside the courthouse, Rachel’s phone rang.
Her face changed.
“What?”
She listened.
Then looked at Dominic.
“Grant is gone.”
Dominic stared.
“What does that mean?”
“He didn’t show up for the trust hearing.”
“So?”
“The financial investigators went to his office.”
Rachel swallowed.
“It’s empty.”
Computers gone.
Files gone.
Personal safe cleared.
Grant Mercer had spent decades presenting himself as the calmest man in any room.
Now he had disappeared the moment the money stopped moving.
May you like
👉 Grant’s absence made him look guilty—but the files he took with him might contain the only records capable of proving how much he had stolen.
