Chapter 7 - Sofia’s Warning

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Dominic did not sleep.
At sunrise, he opened Sofia’s study.
Nobody had entered it in months.
He had not been ready.
Her reading glasses still sat beside a book.
A scarf hung over the back of the chair.
A photograph of Lily at three months old stood beside the window.
Dominic stopped there longest.
Sofia had died in a highway accident five months earlier.
Police had investigated.
Another driver lost control in heavy rain.
There had never been evidence of foul play.
Dominic did not invent one now.
The grief was painful enough without turning tragedy into fantasy.
But Sofia had clearly been investigating the trust before she died.
Rachel joined him.
“Where would she keep financial paperwork?”
Dominic almost laughed.
“Everywhere.”
Sofia had been organized only by standards known to herself.
They opened drawers.
Cabinets.
Boxes.
Nothing.
Then Dominic remembered an argument.
Two weeks before her death, Sofia had told him—
“Grant keeps explaining things I didn’t ask him to explain.”
Dominic had barely listened.
He had been leaving for a meeting.
“What things?”
“The trust.”
He had kissed her and said—
“Grant’s managed it forever.”
Sofia’s reply returned now with painful clarity.
“That doesn’t mean he should manage it forever.”
Dominic sat down.
Rachel looked at him.
“You remember something.”
He told her.
They searched her email.
Most trust correspondence had been archived.
One thread stood out.
SOFIA VALERO:
Please provide full transaction history for the Legacy Trust.
GRANT MERCER:
There is no reason to burden you with decades of technical records.
SOFIA:
I didn’t ask whether you thought I needed them.
Three days later:
SOFIA:
Why were $4.8 million in “consulting fees” paid to North River entities?
No response.
Another email:
SOFIA:
Who is Owen Mercer in relation to those entities?
Then nothing.
Rachel stared.
“Sofia found the company before tonight.”
Dominic felt sick.
He had lived beside her.
Slept beside her.
Held their baby with her.
And never knew she was quietly pulling at a thread that might expose millions.
Then Rachel found a draft email that had never been sent.
TO: DOMINIC.
Subject:
If I’m right, Grant has been—
The draft ended there.
No explanation.
Dominic stared at the unfinished sentence.
He could almost see Sofia being interrupted.
Or deciding she needed more proof.
Rachel searched attachments.
One file.
A photograph.
Sofia had photographed a ledger.
Several payments.
North River.
Mercer Strategic.
Another company:
C.V. Advisory.
Dominic immediately understood the initials.
Celeste Valero.
Payments totaling $640,000.
Rachel whispered—
“She was being paid.”
Dominic’s anger returned.
But the ledger contained something even more important.
A handwritten note in Sofia’s margin.
LILY TURNS ONE = THEY LOSE CONTROL.
Dominic stared.
Sofia had understood the scheme months before anyone else.
Then security called.
The forensic lab had preliminary audio enhancement.
They could not certify the voice yet.
But they had isolated one phrase from the nursery call.
The speaker addressed Celeste by name.
And Celeste answered him with one word.
“Grant.”

👉 Sofia’s unfinished warning and the nursery recording were now pointing at the same man—the adviser Dominic’s family had trusted for three decades.
