Chapter 16 - What Sofia Actually Left Lily

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The financial audit continued for months.

But Dominic changed one rule immediately.

No business discussions in Lily’s nursery.

Ever.

That room belonged to stuffed animals, bottles, bedtime music, and increasingly dangerous crawling.

Lily developed a fascination with Dominic’s watch.

Every time he held her, she grabbed it.

Hannah called it expensive teething equipment.

Dominic stopped wearing it around her.

One afternoon, Julia Mason arrived with another sealed file.

“Sofia left this with me personally.”

Dominic frowned.

“Why now?”

“She instructed me to deliver it once Lily’s trust was safe from Grant.”

Inside was not another legal trap.

Not another accusation.

A letter.

For Lily.

Dominic did not open it.

“It’s hers.”

Julia smiled.

“There’s also one for you.”

That one he opened.

Sofia’s handwriting filled two pages.

Dom,

If you’re reading this, I was right about Grant—or I became much too dramatic after having a baby.

Dominic laughed despite himself.

Then the letter became serious.

She explained that she discovered unusual trust fees accidentally while preparing Lily’s estate plan.

She did not tell Dominic immediately because she knew he would confront Grant before she had proof.

She needed evidence first.

Then she wrote:

If anything happens to me, do not turn Lily’s life into a war over money.

That stopped him.

The trust matters because it gives her choices.

But the most important thing we can leave her is the certainty that she was loved before she understood what love meant.

Dominic sat quietly.

Sofia knew him.

She knew grief could become anger.

Anger could become purpose.

And purpose could swallow everything.

He folded the letter.

That evening, he changed his schedule.

Fewer late meetings.

More mornings at home.

He learned how to warm bottles correctly.

He learned Lily hated bananas.

He learned she laughed whenever he sneezed.

He learned that an eight-month-old baby did not care who controlled fifty-one percent of anything.

Then the civil recovery numbers arrived.

More than eighty percent of the diverted assets had been traced.

Several transactions could be reversed.

Properties could be returned.

Insurance and seized accounts could cover more.

Not everything.

But enough.

Rachel expected Dominic to focus on the missing money.

He didn’t.

“What happens to Lily’s trust?”

“Independent management.”

“Good.”

“You’ll still have parental authority.”

“Good.”

“But not unilateral financial control.”

“Even better.”

Rachel looked surprised.

Dominic smiled.

“Sofia would approve.”

Then Lily crawled into his office.

Straight past him.

Toward Sofia’s framed photograph.

She pulled herself upright against the cabinet.

Dominic rushed to steady her.

Lily slapped both hands against the frame and laughed.

Dominic’s eyes burned.

“Yeah.”

He lifted her.

“That’s your mom.”

For once, there was no conspiracy hidden in the moment.

No evidence.

No court filing.

Just a father telling his daughter who loved her first.
