Chapter 17 - Celeste’s Sentence

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Celeste eventually accepted a plea agreement.

Not because Dominic offered forgiveness.

He had no authority to erase criminal consequences.

And he did not ask prosecutors to.

Her cooperation against Grant was considered.

So was her admission.

So was the fact that Lily had not physically ingested the dog food.

But the court also considered something Celeste’s attorney could not soften.

She had deliberately used an infant in a staged act of degradation to provoke violence and influence a custody proceeding.

At sentencing, Celeste looked toward Dominic.

He sat beside Rachel.

No expression.

The judge addressed Celeste directly.

“You repeatedly described the child as leverage.”

Celeste lowered her eyes.

“You filed a guardianship petition before manufacturing the event you intended to use to support it.”

Silence.

“And when financial gain was offered, you chose participation.”

Celeste received incarceration, financial penalties, restitution obligations, and protective restrictions barring unauthorized contact with Lily.

She lost every trust role.

Every board seat connected to the scheme.

The $1.9 million traced to improper payments became part of the recovery proceedings.

Outside court, reporters waited.

Dominic used another exit.

He did not need a victory speech.

Months earlier, humiliation would have felt satisfying.

Now it felt empty.

Then Celeste’s attorney approached.

“She wants you to have this.”

An envelope.

Dominic did not open it until he returned home.

Celeste had written:

I keep trying to find the moment I became someone who could look at a baby and see a business opportunity.

I can’t find one.

Maybe there wasn’t one moment.

Maybe it happened every time I chose resentment because it felt easier than admitting I was jealous.

Dominic stopped.

Celeste wrote about Adrian.

Her late husband.

She had spent years believing he was diminished by Dominic’s power.

After Adrian died, that resentment had nowhere to go.

Sofia became a target.

Then Lily.

Then Grant offered Celeste a story she wanted to believe:

Dominic controlled too much.

Celeste deserved more.

The family needed “balance.”

Money made the lie easier.

The letter ended—

I know saying I’m sorry does not give me a place in Lily’s life.

Dominic folded it.

That sentence mattered.

Not enough for forgiveness.

But enough to show that consequences had finally reached the part of Celeste that excuses could no longer protect.

He stored the letter.

One day Lily could decide whether to read it.

Not now.

Lily was learning to stand.

She had more important problems.

Like falling onto pillows.

Then Rachel called.

Grant’s case had reached resolution too.

His financial records were overwhelming.

His attorneys had negotiated.

Dominic asked only one question.

“Is Lily’s money protected?”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me the rest tomorrow.”

Rachel laughed.

“You’ve changed.”

Dominic looked toward Lily.

She was standing unsteadily while Hannah held out both hands.

“No.”

He smiled.

“I just figured out what matters first.”
