Chapter 12 - The Patch

Noah finally told me why he recognized the patch.

His older sister had served at another training command evaluated by our detachment.

“She told me if I ever see yellow-and-black, don’t suddenly start behaving better.”

I smiled.

“Good advice.”

“She said it means someone is checking whether the unit works when nobody is performing for inspection.”

Close enough.

Our patch was deliberately visible.

The theory was simple.

A healthy command should not panic when evaluators appear.

If food safety, emergency procedures, discipline, and reporting systems are functioning normally, evaluation becomes boring.

Boring evaluations are excellent.

Noah had not recognized my rank immediately from across the room.

He recognized the evaluator marking first.

That was why his expression changed.

But his intervention mattered for a better reason.

He grabbed Jake’s arm before he knew exactly who I was.

The patch made him understand consequences.

He still chose to act.

That difference would matter later.
