Chapter 20 - Ethan Learns to Keep His Hands to Himself

Ethan’s correction was simpler.

He had grown up in competitive sports.

Physical joking.

Shoulder grabs.

Shoves.

Headlocks between friends.

He assumed intent defined everything.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt you.”

I answered:

“I didn’t think you were.”

He looked confused.

“Then why was it such a big deal?”

“Because you were using your body to prevent another person from acting freely.”

That landed.

He asked:

“So touching anyone is wrong now?”

Classic overcorrection.

“No.”

“Then?”

“Context. Consent. Purpose.”

Military work often requires physical contact.

Rescue.

Training.

Medical care.

Crowded spaces.

Combat.

But:

I was holding her because my friend wanted to humiliate her

is not operational necessity.

Ethan eventually understood.

At least enough to stop arguing semantics.
