Chapter 23 - The Breakfast Table

Six months later, I returned for a follow-up.

Same dining hall.

Same stainless-steel tables.

Different ventilation motor.

I took a tray.

Chicken again.

Apparently Navy menus enjoy symbolism.

I sat alone.

No trap.

Just breakfast.

A group of recruits entered.

Jake among them.

He saw me.

Paused.

Then walked past.

Good.

No forced greeting.

No performance.

No apology sequel.

Ten minutes later Mason joined him at another table.

They were talking normally.

Not friends exactly.

Not enemies.

Jake reached toward Mason’s fries.

Stopped.

Asked:

“You eating those?”

Mason said:

“Yes.”

Jake withdrew his hand.

May you like

I almost laughed.

Human civilization advances in tiny increments.
