Chapter 9 - Mason

Mason Reed was nineteen.

Youngest in the group.

He had not filed a complaint.

When interviewed, he initially said:

“Nothing happened.”

Then:

“Jake messes around.”

Then:

“It’s fine.”

The evaluator asked whether anyone had forced him to rebuild his bunk repeatedly.

Mason shrugged.

“Training.”

“Did an instructor order it?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

“Jake.”

“How many times?”

“Six.”

“Why?”

“He said the sheet had wrinkles.”

“Was Jake assigned to inspect your bunk?”

“No.”

“Then why obey him?”

Mason stared at the table.

“Everyone else was watching.”

That is how unofficial authority grows.

Not through legal power.

Through social cost.

Refuse and become the next joke.

Obey and maybe they move on.

The command had been teaching military discipline.

Inside the cracks, Jake was teaching submission to Jake.

Those are not the same thing.
