Chapter 10 - Eight Years of Saturdays

Claire asked for the whole timeline.

I gave it.

Not summary.

Calendar.

Bank records.

Travel.

Photos.

Every lie I could remember.

She said:

“I want no surprises later.”

So I stopped editing myself.

Ryan age two:

First meeting.

Paternity confirmed.

Ryan age three:

Two Saturday visits monthly.

One overnight every other month after adjustment.

Ryan age four:

Weekly video calls.

Megan moved forty-five minutes farther north.

I met Ryan at parks, museums, her apartment, hotels during travel? Not hotels as secret family. Sometimes local outings.

Ryan age five:

I attended kindergarten family day.

Told Claire I had a lender lunch.

Lie.

Ryan age six:

First baseball game.

I missed one of Lily’s toddler music classes.

Told Claire board call ran late.

Lie.

Ryan age seven:

Megan allowed three-day summer trip to Washington.

I told Claire I was at a foundation retreat.

Lie.

Ryan age eight:

I attended his birthday at a trampoline park.

Claire had influenza.

I left for:

“an urgent property issue.”

Lie.

Ryan age nine:

Megan diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer.

This was the point everything should have changed.

Claire stared.

“One year ago?”

“Fourteen months.”

“You knew she might die.”

“Yes.”

“And still said nothing.”

“Yes.”

“What did you tell Ryan?”

“That I would take care of him.”

“What did you tell me?”

Nothing.

Claire closed the binder.

Walked away.

Then returned.

“How much support?”

Initially $3,200 monthly plus medical and childcare.

Later adjusted to $4,600 plus school tuition and insurance.

Not a hidden mansion.

Not hush money.

A normal high-income child-support arrangement negotiated by lawyers.

Claire asked:

“Did any money come from our joint accounts?”

“No.”

“Prove it.”

I did.

Personal premarital investment account and salary account designated individually.

That detail did not save me morally.

It mattered legally.

I had not secretly diverted Claire’s money.

I had secretly divided my life.

May you like

That was enough.
