Chapter 23 - Megan’s Final Recording

Karen found it on Megan’s phone eighteen months after her death.
Not hidden dramatically.
Cloud backup recovered during estate cleanup.
A voice memo addressed:
For Ryan when he is older. Daniel can hear it first if he wants.
I listened.
Megan’s voice sounded weak.
Cancer.
Still Megan.
“Ryan, if you are hearing this, I probably didn’t get as much time as I wanted.”
I stopped.
Then restarted later.
She said:
“Your father loves you.”
There.
“He also has made some very stupid choices because he hates disappointing people.”
Fair.
“You are not a secret because there is something wrong with you.”
There.
“You became a secret because adults were afraid.”
There.
“My fear started it.”
There.
“Your dad’s fear kept it going too long.”
There.
Then:
“Claire did not agree to any of this because she did not know.”
Important.
“Lily did not take your father.”
There.
“If you ever live with them, do not enter their home thinking you have to replace someone to belong.”
I cried.
Megan had recorded this before the attack.
She knew.
Maybe not what Ryan would do.
But the emotional danger.
The final line:
“Your father has enough love. Make him learn enough honesty.”
I laughed through tears.
Then I asked Dr. Wells whether Ryan should hear it.
Not immediately.
At eleven, after preparation, he listened.
He stopped twice.
Then said:
“Mom knew I was mad at Lily.”
“She knew you were struggling.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“She tried.”
He hated that answer.
Because dead parents become perfect in grief.
Dr. Wells helped him hold both.
Megan loved him.
Megan also made mistakes.
She had hidden paternity initially.
She had sometimes complained bitterly about my other family where Ryan could hear.
She later corrected.
No saint.
No villain.
Mother.
At the end Ryan asked:
“Did Mom forgive you?”
I said:
“I don’t know.”
“Did you forgive her?”
“Yes.”
“For hiding me?”
“Eventually.”
He nodded.
“Maybe Claire will.”
Maybe.
May you like
No promise.
