Chapter 22 - Ryan’s Room Exists Before He Moves Into It

At sixteen months, I rented a two-bedroom apartment near Karen.

Not because Ryan needed luxury.

Because I needed a place where I could parent him overnight without forcing Claire and Lily into immediate co-residence.

Ryan hated it.

“This isn’t home.”

“It’s where we’re starting.”

“You have a mansion.”

“I have a house.”

“With Lily.”

“Yes.”

He glared.

I let him.

The apartment had:

His bedroom.

My bedroom.

Kitchen.

No staff.

No housekeeper during our weekends.

I cooked badly.

He learned laundry.

Not punishment.

Life.

For the first time, Ryan had a place with me that did not require being hidden.

His school bag remained.

Toothbrush.

Clothes.

Photos.

He put one photograph of Megan on the desk.

One of us at his eighth birthday.

Then asked:

“Can I put Lily?”

I was surprised.

“Do you want to?”

“No.”

Fair.

The bedroom was still his.

I told Claire the apartment existed.

She said:

“Good.”

No jealousy.

No accusation that I was building another secret household.

Because it was not secret.

Difference.

Eventually Lily knew.

“Dad has apartment with Ryan.”

She asked:

“Why?”

“Because Dad is helping Ryan have a safe place while you two learn how to be around each other.”

“Do I go?”

“Not unless you want and grown-ups decide it’s safe.”

At seven, she visited once.

Daytime.

Claire came.

Ryan had cleaned for three hours.

Lily entered.

Looked around.

“Small.”

Ryan stared.

Compared to our house, yes.

I almost intervened.

He said:

“Yeah.”

Then:

“My room bigger than yours?”

Lily gasped.

Competition.

Normal sibling kind.

May you like

I nearly cried from relief.
