Chapter 21 - Lily and Ryan Meet Again

Fourteen months after the attack.

Not sooner.

Both therapists agreed to a ten-minute mediated meeting.

Neutral office.

No house.

No grandparents.

Claire.

Me.

Two therapists.

Karen nearby.

Lily was six.

Ryan eleven.

Ryan entered first.

Sat.

Hands under legs.

Lily came in.

Saw him.

Stopped.

I almost moved toward her.

Dr. Sloan held up one finger.

Let Lily choose.

She took Claire’s hand.

Sat farthest away.

Ryan looked at the scar near her temple.

Very faint now.

He started crying immediately.

Lily watched.

No obligation to comfort.

Ryan had practiced an apology.

Dr. Wells told him not to memorize too perfectly.

He said:

“I hit you with the brick.”

There.

“I was mad at Dad and I hit you.”

There.

“You didn’t do anything to make me hit you.”

There.

“I was jealous.”

There.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily asked:

“Did you want kill me?”

Everyone froze.

Ryan shook his head hard.

“No.”

“Why brick?”

“I wanted you to go away.”

Lily looked at Claire.

Then back.

“Because Daddy?”

“Yes.”

Lily thought.

“Daddy can have two kids.”

There.

Ryan’s face broke.

“I know now.”

Lily said:

“I don’t want you at my house.”

Important.

Ryan nodded.

“Okay.”

No adult corrected her.

The current safety plan agreed.

Then Lily asked:

“Do you have Dad picture?”

Ryan looked confused.

“Yes.”

“I have lots.”

Ryan lowered his eyes.

Lily said:

“You can have pictures.”

Children sometimes offer exactly what they are not required to give.

Ryan whispered:

“Okay.”

Ten minutes ended.

No hug.

Good.

Lily left.

Ryan stayed behind and sobbed.

Not because he had been rejected.

Because a six-year-old had just told him he could possess Dad’s image without taking hers away.

It was more generosity than he deserved that day.

We did not turn it into forgiveness.

May you like

It was a beginning.
