Chapter 4 - Megan

Megan Cole and I met eleven years earlier at a charity auction in Boston.
I was thirty-seven.
Divorced? No.
Never married.
Claire had not entered my life yet.
Megan was thirty-two.
Commercial photographer.
Funny.
Impatient.
Completely unimpressed by money.
We dated for six months.
Then stopped.
No betrayal.
No pregnancy fight.
She said I treated my calendar like a religion.
I said she turned every disagreement into an independence test.
We were probably both right.
Three months after we ended, Megan learned she was pregnant.
Why did she not tell me?
Years later she gave three explanations.
First:
She was angry.
Second:
She believed another man she had briefly seen near the end of our relationship might be the father.
Third:
By the time DNA excluded him after Ryan was born, she had already built a life around doing it herself.
None of those explanations made hiding paternity ideal.
They were human.
I learned when Ryan was twenty-two months old.
Megan called.
“I need you to meet someone.”
I thought she meant boyfriend.
Then I saw the boy.
Gray eyes.
My mother’s chin.
Megan said:
“He’s probably yours.”
“Probably?”
We tested.
Accredited laboratory.
99.99 percent plus.
Mine.
I was engaged to Claire.
Wedding ten months away.
I told Megan:
“I have to tell Claire.”
Megan panicked.
“No.”
“She’s going to be my wife.”
“I don’t want the Bennetts in his life.”
“My family is not a criminal syndicate.”
“I didn’t say they were.”
“You said Bennetts.”
“You know exactly what that means.”
My family was old money.
Private equity.
Commercial real estate.
Foundation boards.
Not criminal.
Still powerful enough to frighten someone who had just admitted hiding my child.
Megan feared custody litigation.
She feared press.
She feared my mother, who was alive then and extremely opinionated.
Mostly she feared losing control of a son she had raised alone.
We went to lawyers.
A private parentage action.
Confidential where legally possible.
Acknowledgment.
Child support.
Parenting schedule.
Megan retained primary residential custody.
I received regular parenting time.
No gag order preventing me from telling Claire.
Important.
Megan asked me personally to wait.
“For now.”
I agreed.
That was the first failure.
May you like
“For now” became our favorite hiding place.
