Chapter 16 - Megan’s Will

Megan’s estate was modest.
A condominium with equity.
Photography equipment.
Retirement account.
Life insurance.
Nothing dramatic.
Her will left most assets in trust for Ryan.
Karen served as trustee.
I was not.
Megan did not want money and custody mixed.
Smart.
The final section concerned Ryan’s care.
Because I was his legally recognized father, Megan could not simply appoint someone else over me.
Her document acknowledged that.
It said:
I understand Daniel Bennett is Ryan’s surviving legal parent and will have parental rights upon my death subject to any court orders then in effect.
Then:
It is my strong wish that Daniel transition Ryan into his household gradually, with professional support, and that he disclose Ryan’s existence to his spouse before Ryan is asked to live in that home.
There.
Megan anticipated exactly what I failed to do.
Then:
If Daniel has not made that disclosure by the time of my death, I ask Karen to keep Ryan temporarily while the adults establish a truthful and safe transition.
Karen followed it.
I did not.
I picked Ryan up twelve days after Megan died and brought him to my house.
Why?
Because he begged.
Because I felt guilty.
Because I thought delaying again would prove I was ashamed.
All emotionally understandable.
Still wrong.
Megan had written a safer plan.
I ignored it because I wanted to repair eight years in one afternoon.
That was my pattern.
Avoid conflict until pressure became unbearable.
Then act too fast.
Claire read the will.
She looked at me.
“She knew you.”
“Yes.”
“She predicted this.”
“Yes.”
“Did you read it before bringing Ryan?”
My silence answered.
Claire closed her eyes.
“You didn’t.”
“I had a copy. I had not read the full final version.”
“Because?”
“I was arranging the funeral, school, lawyers—”
“Stop.”
She was right.
Excuses.
“I did not read it.”
There.
Megan had died.
May you like
I still made her carry the wisdom after death.
