Chapter 24 - Claire Comes Back

Twenty months after the attack, Claire ended the legal separation.
Not with a reunion dinner.
Paper.
Her lawyer emailed mine.
Then Claire told me herself.
“I want to try living together again.”
I did not touch her.
“When?”
“Slowly.”
“What does that mean?”
“Three nights a week first.”
“Okay.”
“Lily’s routine stays.”
“Yes.”
“Ryan does not move into the house because I moved back.”
“Yes.”
She looked suspicious.
“You agree very quickly now.”
“I have discovered questions.”
She almost laughed.
Then:
“I need one more condition.”
“Anything reasonable.”
“If there is a truth you are afraid will make me leave, that is the truth you tell first.”
There.
“Yes.”
“No deciding timing.”
“Yes.”
“No protecting me from information.”
“Yes.”
“No asking Megan’s ghost whether it’s a good week.”
I laughed despite myself.
“Yes.”
Claire returned.
Not fully.
She kept the townhouse lease six months.
Insurance.
Emotionally.
I did not ask when she would end it.
Eventually she did.
Our marriage changed.
I no longer gave her my passwords as theatrical proof.
She did not want surveillance.
Trust is not access to every device.
We built routines.
Weekly calendar meeting.
Direct conversation.
Therapy twice monthly.
No major parenting commitment affecting the household without discussion.
Obvious.
Write obvious rules when your family has proven it can ignore them.
Claire met Ryan in therapy after twenty-two months.
Not as stepmother.
Not as victim’s mother only.
As my wife.
She said:
“I am angry with your father.”
Ryan nodded.
“I’m angry too.”
“I am also afraid of you around Lily.”
He looked down.
“I know.”
“That can change only through behavior over time.”
“I know.”
Then:
“I don’t hate you for existing.”
Ryan started crying.

That sentence had been waiting eight years.
