Chapter 26 - Rosie returns to the hotel

Eighteen months later, Rosie asked to visit the hotel.
The same staircase.
She was almost ten.
Vivienne came.

No gala.
No crowd.
Just afternoon tea.
Rosie stood at bottom.
Looked up.
Then:
“That’s where.”
“Yes.”
Vivienne’s hand tightened around mine.
Rosie noticed.
“You okay?”
Vivienne laughed softly.
“I was going to ask you.”
“I’m fine.”
She climbed.
Slowly.
At the fourth step she stopped.
Looked back.
Then continued.
At the top she turned.
“No Delphine.”
“No.”
“Good.”
