Chapter 26 - Lily and the champagne glass

A year later, we attended another formal event.
Different ballroom.
Different hotel.
Lily was five.
She wore a purple dress.
Still carried the rabbit.
Less often.
At dinner, a server placed a glass of sparkling water in front of me.
Lily stared.
I noticed.
She signed:
Safe?
I answered:
Safe.
She watched me drink.
Then laughed.
I asked:
What?
She signed:
You made scared face.
Apparently I had.
Trauma is rude like that.
It does not wait for permission.
I took another sip.
Nothing happened.
May you like
Lily returned to dessert.
A glass became a glass again.
