Chapter 7 - Vanessa managed my evenings

Not officially.
Gradually.
“Sit down, Graham.”
“Eat something.”
“Take tonight off.”
“I’ll answer that call.”
“Let me deal with the board.”
Normal things partners say.
Except over three months, Vanessa began controlling:
Which dinners I attended.
When I took calls.
What information reached me after 8 p.m.
She started telling colleagues:
“His hearing becomes worse when he’s fatigued.”
Again:
Plausible.
Sometimes true.
Then:
“Please send important issues through me tonight.”
That was not something I had authorized.
My general counsel later showed me several emails where Vanessa had written:
Graham is having another auditory episode. I’ll summarize for him.
May you like
The problem?
Two of those nights I had no memory of telling her that.
