Chapter 10

Sarah clutched the white towel tighter around her frail body. She looked down at the marble floor, her brow furrowing as she tried to pull the memories from the dark trauma of the past few months.
"He always wore a mask," Sarah whispered, her voice echoing slightly in the large bathroom. "A black mask over his face. But he smelled like the smoke from the fireplace."
Ryan frowned, exchanging a quick, tense look with Emily. "Smoke?"
"Cigars," Emily supplied quietly. "Half the men in your organization smoke cigars, Ryan."
"What else, sweetheart?" Ryan asked, keeping his voice incredibly soft. "Did he have any tattoos? Did he walk a certain way?"
Sarah shook her head. "I don't know. He only came in the dark. He would open a little door on the outside of the house and push the food in. He said if I cried, he would come inside and get me."
Ryan’s blood ran cold. An outside door. The maintenance cavity wasn't just accessible from the hallway. There was an external vent on the south wall of the estate. Someone had been driving up to his property, bypassing the outer perimeter guards, and feeding her from the outside.
That meant it wasn't a rival family operating from afar. It was someone with security clearance. Someone who knew the guard rotations. Someone who knew the blind spots in the camera network.
"Sarah," Ryan said, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Did the man ever say his name? Did he ever talk to anyone else while you were listening?"
Sarah nodded slowly. "Sometimes he talked on a telephone. He yelled a lot."
"What did he say?" Ryan pressed, his hands resting gently on her small shoulders.
"He said he was tired of waiting," Sarah recalled, her innocent eyes locking onto Ryan’s. "He told the telephone that the boss was getting weak. He said it was time to take over."
Ryan stood up slowly. The pieces were clicking into place, forming a picture so horrific he could barely process it. This wasn't an external attack. It was a coup. Someone inside his own inner circle had discovered Maria, killed her, and used the child to psychologically break him before making a move for the throne.
"Did he ever say a name, Sarah?" Emily asked, stepping closer, her face pale with fear. "Did you ever hear a name?"
Sarah looked at Emily, then back at Ryan. She nodded.
"He called the telephone man... Uncle Marcus," Sarah whispered.
The silence in the bathroom was deafening. Ryan stared at his daughter, the name echoing in his skull. Marcus. His right-hand man. The enforcer he had just ordered to lock down the estate. The man currently in charge of all the security outside their bedroom door.
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the master bedroom rattled violently as someone from the hallway attempted to force the lock.

"Boss?" Marcus's gruff voice called out from the other side of the door. "You in there? We have a situation."
Ryan looked at Emily. He slowly reached behind his back, his hand wrapping around the cold steel of the heavy pistol tucked into his waistband.
