Chapter 19

Three months after the night of terror, the sprawling mansion had been fully restored to its former glory. The hollow maintenance access panel in the south wing had been entirely removed, replaced by solid, reinforced concrete and steel. Sarah was sitting on a plush wool rug in the sunlit living room, her bright, innocent laughter ringing through the air. Her previously hollow cheeks were now full and rosy, and the haunting fear in her eyes had completely faded. She was deeply engrossed in building a massive wooden block tower with Lily.

"No, Sarah, not that piece! The castle needs a red roof!" Lily chirped, waving a brightly colored block.

"I like the yellow one. It looks like the sun," Sarah replied softly, her smile genuine and warm. Both girls clapped their hands excitedly as the wooden structure held steady.

Ryan stood leaning against the heavy glass of the patio doors, sipping a glass of aged bourbon. He had overhauled the entire security grid, bringing in loyal mercenaries from overseas to ensure no traitor could ever slip through the cracks again. Emily walked out of the massive kitchen carrying a tray of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, calling the girls over. Hearing Sarah happily refer to Emily as "Mom" brought a rare, deep peace to his hardened soul.

He stepped back and wrapped his arms around Emily’s waist, kissing the top of her head. "I love you," Ryan murmured. But as Emily turned, her eyes caught a brief glimpse of the dark ink peeking over the collar of Sarah’s shirt—the coordinates permanently scarred into the child’s flesh. The domestic bliss was beautiful, but they both knew it was only the quiet eye of a massive, impending hurricane.
