Chapter 17

As the first pale rays of dawn broke over the horizon, the estate had been entirely secured. Ryan walked up to the master suite and typed the complex decryption code into the hidden wall panel. The heavy titanium doors hissed open, and Emily instantly rushed out. She threw her arms around her husband, sobbing uncontrollably as she buried her face into his dust- and blood-covered shirt. "You're alive... Thank God," she cried, holding him as if he might vanish.

From the safety of the vault, little Lily peeked out, holding Sarah’s trembling hand. The starved, pale child was wearing an oversized sweater that belonged to Lily, carefully hiding the jagged tattoo on her back. Though the violence and bloodstains in the hallway were terrifying, when Sarah’s eyes met Ryan’s, a profound, unbreakable connection pulled them together.

Ryan dropped to one knee, ignoring the pain in his battered muscles, and opened his arms wide. This time, Sarah didn't hesitate. She ran forward, throwing herself into his embrace and burying her face in the broad chest of the father she had been promised. "You are safe now, Sarah," Ryan choked out, hot tears escaping the eyes of the ruthless kingpin. "There are no more bad men in the dark. I swear on my life, I will protect you."

Emily knelt beside them, wrapping her arms around her husband and the two girls. Amidst the shattered wood and bullet holes of the ruined hallway, a new, fiercely loyal family was forged. Hours later, the syndicate’s professional "cleaners" arrived. Black vans quietly pulled into the driveway, removing the bodies and scrubbing the marble floors with chemical bleach, entirely erasing the horrific bloodshed of the night before.
