Chapter 3

The sudden exposure to the hallway light caused the shadow in the wall to scramble backward in absolute terror. The sound of bare feet scraping against drywall echoed in the tight space.

"Hey," Ryan said, his deep voice cracking with a sudden, overwhelming shock. "Hey, stop."

A frightened little girl crawled backward into the deepest, darkest corner of the cavity, pressing her frail back against the wooden studs. She was incredibly thin and pale, her fair, rosy skin smudged with dirt and dust. Her messy brown hair hung in tangled waves around her face. She wore an old, heavily oversized gray t-shirt that swallowed her small frame, and she had no shoes on her filthy, bruised feet. She looked to be no older than six.

Instinctively, Emily pulled Lily entirely behind her back, shielding her daughter with her own body. "Oh my god," Emily breathed, her hands trembling as she stared at the feral child living inside her walls. "Ryan, who is that?"

Ryan didn't answer. He couldn't. His heart was hammering against his ribs in a way it hadn't done in years. He knelt slowly at the edge of the jagged opening, ignoring the sharp splinters of wood near his tailored trousers.

He slowly, deliberately reached one hand toward the trembling child in the darkness. He kept his palm open, his movements agonizingly slow.

"Don’t be afraid," Ryan said, his voice trembling in a way Emily had never heard before. "I won’t hurt you. I promise you, nobody is going to hurt you."

The little girl stopped scrambling. She pressed her knees to her chest, her large, terrified eyes locked onto Ryan’s outstretched hand. The gold watch on his wrist caught the light, glinting softly.

"Come on," Ryan coaxed, his tone impossibly gentle. "It's safe out here. Let me help you."

Lily peaked around Emily’s leg. "It's okay!" Lily chirped softly. "My daddy is nice!"

The hidden girl hesitated for a long, agonizing moment. Then, very cautiously, she crawled forward out of the shadows. As she emerged into the amber light of the hallway, Ryan stared at her face. His breath hitched violently. He was visibly confused, his mind racing as he noticed something deeply, horrifyingly familiar in the shape of her eyes and the curve of her jaw.

Emily looked from the starving child to her husband, her intelligent eyes catching the sudden, profound devastation on Ryan’s face.

Lily wiggled past her mother's leg, stepping right up to the opening. She gently reached out and took the little girl’s trembling, dirt-stained hand.

The little girl didn't look at Lily. She didn't look at Emily. Her tear-filled eyes were locked entirely on the rugged, powerful man kneeling before her.

"Daddy..." the little girl whispered.

The word hung in the air, heavier than a death sentence.
