Chapter 12
The interior of the unmarked, armored SUV was quiet and impeccably cold. Emily sat in the driver’s seat, resting her head against the headrest, allowing her eyes to close for a fraction of a second. The punishing overnight drive from a classified black site was finally catching up to her muscles. She had breached three mandatory briefings just to see her brother receive his pin, and now the adrenaline was rapidly fading into a bone-deep ache.
Suddenly, the narrow silver watch strapped tightly to her left wrist vibrated with three sharp, unnatural pulses. To a civilian, it appeared to be a simple, unadorned timepiece. But as Emily pressed a hidden bezel, the highly classified, heavily encrypted piece of tactical hardware projected a microscopic red holographic interface across the dashboard.
"Vanguard," a heavily distorted voice crackled over the secure comms link. "We have a Code Black breach near Coronado. Sinaloa cartel hitmen have crossed the border. Intelligence confirms they are targeting the new SEAL graduates to send a decapitation message to Naval Special Warfare."
Emily’s pale, exhausted face hardened instantly, transforming back into an unreadable mask of pure, cinematic intensity. The golden boy who had just mocked her for looking like a tired office clerk was directly in the crosshairs.
"Send me their projected intercept coordinates," Emily commanded, her soft voice carrying a resonance that demanded immediate belief. "And mobilize the shadow reaction force. I want a containment perimeter set up around the city in ten minutes."
"Vanguard, you are technically on leave," the voice hesitated. "We can handle this."

"They are targeting my brother," Emily replied evenly, shifting the heavy SUV into gear. "I will handle it."
She slammed the accelerator, the vehicle tearing away from the Naval Amphibious Base. Her family had begged her not to embarrass them, entirely ignorant of the fact that she was the only force on earth currently standing between them and a violent death.
