Chapter 6

The silence in the tent stretched out, agonizing and profound. The only sounds were the distant crash of the Pacific waves and the snapping of the American flag in the breeze. Thousands of people held their breath, completely bewildered by the sudden halt of the commencement address.

"Commander?" the master of ceremonies whispered nervously, stepping slightly toward the podium.

Hayes ignored him. His eyes remained permanently locked onto Emily Carter. He recognized her face from heavily redacted briefing files and secure video links out of undisclosed black sites. He knew exactly what she was, and more importantly, he knew the devastating rank and authority she carried beneath that simple black dress.

Ryan shifted uncomfortably in his seat in the front row. He leaned slightly toward his teammate.

"What's happening?" Ryan whispered, his American accent laced with confusion. "Did the teleprompter break? Why is he stopping?"

"I don't know, man," his teammate whispered back. "He looks like he just saw a ghost."

In the third row, the mother adjusted her ostentatious hat, looking around in embarrassment. "This is highly irregular," she muttered to the woman sitting next to her. "I hope they haven't ruined Ryan's big moment."

Emily remained seated, her hands folded perfectly in her lap. She offered Hayes a nearly imperceptible shake of her head, a silent command to continue, to ignore her presence. She wanted the day to belong to her brother.

But Hayes was a man of the old guard. He understood the hierarchy of the shadows better than anyone. He knew that continuing a speech about military honor while a superior of her terrifying caliber sat unrecognized in a folding chair was a profound breach of protocol.

Commander Hayes stepped out from behind the wooden podium. He adjusted his cover, squared his shoulders, and began to walk down the short flight of wooden stairs leading to the turf.

Three senior Master Chiefs, sensing the sudden, critical shift in their commander's demeanor, immediately fell into step behind him, their faces hardening into masks of pure military discipline.

The entire tent watched in breathless silence as the commanding officer of Naval Special Warfare marched directly toward the family seating section.
