Chapter 20

Six months passed since the cinematic drama of the Coronado ceremony. Ryan Carter was currently deployed in the unforgiving mountains of Afghanistan, leading his squad with a newfound, quiet humility that had completely erased the golden boy arrogance of his youth.

Thousands of miles away, in an underground, highly classified black site buried beneath the freezing tundra of Eastern Europe, Emily Carter sat alone in a sterile briefing room. She wore a simple, unadorned black tactical uniform. Her fair, rosy skin was pale from sheer exhaustion, mirroring the very same weariness she had carried to the white folding chairs in California.

On the metal desk in front of her rested a single photograph. It was a picture of Ryan and their mother, beaming with performative pride beneath the massive outdoor tent. Emily was entirely isolated from the frame, omitted from the family history. She looked at the picture, her hands folding calmly, feeling absolutely no regret. Her sacrifice was the shield that kept their smiles pristine.

Suddenly, the narrow silver watch strapped tightly to her left wrist illuminated with a blinding, solid black interface. It was an Omega-level alert.

Commander Hayes’s face appeared on the large encrypted monitor on the wall, his piercing gaze demanding absolute perfection. He looked older, the heavy burden of leadership etched deeper into the lines of his face.

"Vanguard," Hayes said, his deep voice devoid of protocol, filled with profound reverence. "A rogue syndicate has acquired a tactical nuclear payload. They are threatening the Eastern Seaboard. Millions are in the crosshairs."

Emily stood up, moving with a slow, deliberate grace. She picked up her tactical rifle, her eyes locking with Commander Hayes with a calm, unyielding intensity. The quiet professional who operated in the shadows was ready to embrace the dark once more.

"Send me the coordinates, Nathaniel," Emily said softly. "I will handle it."
