Chapter 13

The upscale Coronado waterfront bar was packed with graduating SEALs, their roaring laughter echoing off the dark oak walls. Ryan sat in the center booth, still wearing his pristine dress whites, a half-empty glass of whiskey in his hand. His teammates were celebrating the most important day of their lives, but Ryan felt entirely hollow.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Commander Nathaniel Hayes—the hardened, distinguished veteran with a chest full of ribbons—marching past him to salute his sister. He remembered his mother’s performative smile dissolving as the highest-ranking men in the room treated Emily like a god.
"Carter, drink up man!" his teammate cheered, slapping his broad, athletic shoulder. "We own this town tonight!"
Ryan forced a tight smile, but his American accent clipped with underlying panic. He felt incredibly small. The Trident he had earned was a massive achievement in the light, but Commander Hayes had spoken of the quiet professionals who operated in the shadows. Ryan finally understood that Emily was the terrifying reality behind the Commander's speech.
Before Ryan could take another sip, two men in tailored civilian suits stepped out of the crowd. Their posture radiated the same absolute, unquestioning dedication as the Master Chiefs at the ceremony.
"Ryan Carter," the taller man said quietly. "Commander Hayes requires your presence at the base. Immediately."
Ryan’s stomach dropped. He set his glass down, the coldness instantly vanishing from his face. "Is it my sister? Is Emily okay?"

"We are not at liberty to discuss the Vanguard," the operative replied, his face a mask of pure military discipline. "Come with us."
Ryan followed them out of the bar, leaving his celebrating brothers behind. The cool ocean breeze felt suffocating now. He had spent his entire life trying to outshine Emily, only to realize he had been living safely under the massive, invisible shadow she cast over the world.
