Chapter 8

Emily did not flinch as the four towering military men stopped inches from her chair. She remained seated, her hands folded in her lap, her pale, exhausted face looking up at Commander Hayes. The cinematic lighting caught the subtle gleam of her narrow silver watch.
Commander Nathaniel Hayes came to a halt. He brought the heels of his polished shoes together with a sharp, echoing crack. His spine was perfectly rigid, his posture radiating a level of deference and respect that he rarely showed to admirals.
With blinding speed and flawless precision, Commander Hayes raised his right hand, snapping a razor-sharp, formal military salute.
A split second later, the three senior Master Chiefs behind him mirrored the motion, their salutes held with absolute, unflinching discipline.
A collective gasp echoed through the tent. The mother dropped her lace handkerchief, her hands flying to her pearls, her face turning ashen. Ryan gripped the armrests of his chair, the gold Trident on his chest suddenly feeling incredibly heavy as his entire worldview shattered into a million pieces.
"Ma'am," Commander Hayes said, his deep voice carrying clearly through the silent rows, stripped of all public bravado and filled with profound, genuine reverence. "We have been waiting for you."
The words hung in the air, echoing over the ocean breeze.
Ryan’s jaw clenched in horror. His sister was a civilian. She worked a boring desk job. She was the family disappointment, the woman who missed holidays and birthdays for corporate retreats. Why was the Commander of Naval Special Warfare saluting her?
"Commander," the mother stammered loudly, unable to control her arrogant instincts. "There must be some mistake. That is just Emily. She’s... she’s nobody."

One of the Master Chiefs shot the mother a look so terrifying, so deeply laced with lethal warning, that she instantly snapped her mouth shut and shrank back into her chair.
Hayes did not break his salute. His eyes remained locked on Emily. He was waiting for her to acknowledge him, offering her the absolute authority of the moment.
