Chapter 2

A sudden wave of applause rippled through the front of the tent as the newly qualified Navy SEALs began to filter into the staging area. Among them was Ryan Carter, a man in his late twenties who looked like the quintessential American golden boy. He wore immaculate Navy dress whites, the crisp fabric highlighting his broad, athletic build. Pinned to his chest, gleaming under the bright canopy light, was his new gold Trident. His fair skin was flushed with absolute pride, his jaw set in a confident, almost arrogant line.
Ryan spotted his family’s reserved row and broke away from his teammates, his polished white shoes stepping crisply over the turf. As he approached, his smile faltered entirely when he saw the woman in the simple black dress sitting at the edge of the row.
"Emily," Ryan said, his voice dropping into a harsh, hushed tone as he stopped beside her chair. "What are you doing here? Mom said you were 'working' again."
"I took a leave," Emily replied evenly, not rising to the bait. "I wanted to see you receive your pin, Ryan. Congratulations."
Ryan looked down at her, his eyes scanning her plain black dress and the narrow silver watch, a stark contrast to the glittering military finery surrounding them. His expression hardened with a cold, dismissive superiority. He leaned in slightly, ensuring the surrounding families couldn't hear him.
"Listen to me," Ryan warned, his American accent clipping with irritation. "This is the most important day of my life. I have admirals and commanders walking these aisles. I don't need you sitting here looking like a tired office clerk and bringing down the mood."
"I am just sitting here, Ryan," Emily answered softly, her composure absolute. "I won't cause a scene."

Ryan adjusted his pristine white collar, glaring at her with unabashed disdain. "Don’t embarrass me today, Emily. Sit in the back if you have to, but stay out of the photographs. I earned this Trident, and I’m not letting your mediocrity cast a shadow over it."
"I understand," Emily said, her face an unreadable mask. "Go take your place. I will be perfectly quiet."
