Chapter 1 - the three little judges

The golden light of the private dining room at Il Lusso reflected off polished crystal glasses and white linen tablecloths. Standing beside table seven, thirty-eight-year-old Adrien Moretti adjusted the cuffs of his tailored beige suit. Tall, broad-shouldered, and sharply handsome, the feared Chicago Mafia boss possessed an intense, commanding presence that usually made full-grown men lower their eyes in respect. But tonight, he was simply a man who had been kept waiting for forty-five minutes on a blind date set up by his grandmother.
Adrien checked his luxury gold watch, folded his white silk napkin with practiced precision, and began standing up to leave.
Suddenly, the heavy oak door of the private room swung open.
Stepping through the threshold were three identical five-year-old girls, walking side by side in matching colorful pastel party dresses, each wearing a large ribbon in her hair. They walked with absolute confidence, their clean shoes clicking softly against the hardwood floor.
Adrien paused, hovering above his leather chair in genuine surprise.
The triplets stopped right in front of his table. The lead girl, Lily, stepped forward with a confident smile and politely held out her tiny hand toward the towering billionaire. Standing beside her was Sophie, holding a small pink spiral notebook and a pen like an auditor preparing an inspection, while quiet little Emma stood on the left, her clear eyes studying Adrien’s face with unusual emotional perception.
Lily spoke with crisp, clear politeness. “Our mom is sorry she’s late.”
Adrien looked from the tiny hand held out in front of him to the three identical faces staring up at him. Slowly, a faint, uncharacteristic smile touched his lips. He sat back down in his chair and gestured to the empty seats around the table.
The three girls didn't hesitate. They pulled out the high-backed leather chairs and settled in around him.
Sophie immediately flipped open her pink notebook, clicking her pen. “Question one, Mr. Adrien: Do you have a dog?”
Adrien chuckled softly—a rare, warm sound his associates rarely heard. “I have a German Shepherd named Kaiser.”
Sophie made a quick checkmark in her notebook. “Good. Question two: Do you eat vegetables, or do you leave them on the plate like Uncle Mark?”
“I eat my vegetables,” Adrien replied smoothly, leaning forward with his elbows on the table, entirely charmed by the unexpected panel of judges.
Then, quiet little Emma rested her chin on her small hand. Her posture became serious, her blue eyes fixed directly onto Adrien’s face.
Adrien’s smile slowly faded as all three little girls locked their gazes onto him in complete, breathless unison.
Emma spoke softly, her direct words cutting through the quiet room. “If you like our mommy… will you leave her?”
The silence that fell over the table was absolute. Adrien looked at the three innocent faces, his dark eyes softening completely as Lily explained in a quiet voice that their father had walked away before they were born, leaving their mother to raise all three of them alone while running her small bakery.
Before Adrien could answer, the restaurant door opened again. All three girls turned their heads instantly, their faces lighting up with pure joy.
Lily cheered excitedly. “Mommy!”

Adrien turned his head toward the doorway. Standing in the entrance, wearing an elegant red evening dress with delicate earrings and high heels, was Claire Bennett.
The moment Adrien’s eyes locked onto her face, his breath caught in his throat. His entire expression changed in a single second—a look of intense, stunned recognition washing over his sharp features as if he were staring at a ghost from his past.
