Chapter 17 - a game of shadows

The hands of the grand hall clock clicked together at five minutes before midnight. Outside the ballroom’s tall stained-glass windows, the first promotional fireworks launched into the dark night sky over Lake Michigan, illuminating the room with flashes of crimson, gold, and white light. The thunderous booms echoed through the glass, mingling with the swell of the orchestra’s waltz. Adrien guided Claire and the girls toward a private raised dais near the left wall, his hand resting instinctively near the hidden shoulder holster beneath his tuxedo jacket.
Suddenly, the brilliant crystal chandeliers suspended from the high ceiling flickered twice and plunged the entire ballroom into pitch-black darkness. Gasps and muffled screams erupted from the hundreds of high-society guests as panic spread through the room. Emergency red lights kicked on along the floorboards, casting eerie, blood-red shadows across the grand hall. Before the security team could react, heavy iron fire doors slammed shut around the main exits, trapping everyone inside the central hall.
From the upper balconies, armed men dressed in black tactical gear rappelled down thick ropes, their laser sights cutting red lines through the gloom. They were Julian Vance’s elite strike team, deployed to cause maximum chaos and capture Adrien’s family during the confusion. But Adrien was far from unprepared. The moment the lights had died, Marco and twenty elite Moretti guards had formed a human shield around the dais, drawing suppressed weapons with practiced, lethal precision.

Adrien scooped up Lily and Emma in his powerful arms, while Claire pulled Sophie close to her chest behind the solid oak dais. Shouts and suppressed gunfire echoed through the cavernous room as Moretti soldiers intercepted the attackers in the darkness. Amidst the chaos, Sophie’s beaded purse caught on the carved corner of the wooden dais, snapping the delicate strap. Her pink notebook fell to the marble floor, sliding several feet into the dimly lit aisle where armed men were advancing.
Seeing her precious notebook—which contained all her observations, clues, and drawings—sliding away, Sophie gasped and reached out from behind her mother’s skirt. Before Claire could grab her, Sophie darted forward into the open aisle to retrieve it. A masked Vance gunman emerging from the red shadow locked his weapon sight directly on the tiny girl. Adrien’s eyes narrowed into pure fury. Dropping his defensive posture, he leaped across the dais, throwing his body over Sophie just as a silent bullet shattered the marble floor where she had been standing half a second before.
