Chapter 15 - dancing in the storm

The revelation of Mark’s betrayal sent a chilling wave through the mansion, but Adrien handled the situation with swift, silent efficiency. Mark was removed from the property by Marco’s men to be interrogated in an underground facility, ensuring he would never threaten Claire or the children again. With the traitor exposed, a heavy air of anticipation hung over the estate as night fell. The storm outside intensified, howling through the tall pine trees, but inside, Adrien ordered the fireplaces lit in every room to dispel the damp cold.
To comfort Claire after the traumatic afternoon, Adrien arranged an intimate family dinner in the grand dining hall. He dismissed the guards from inside the room, wanting to offer Claire and the girls a rare moment of absolute normalcy amidst the rising chaos. The table was set with warm flickering candles, porcelain plates, and simple homemade comfort food that Claire preferred over gourmet dining. The girls laughed heartily as Kaiser sat beside the table wearing a red silk napkin tied around his neck like a bib, gently taking green beans from Lily’s fingers.
After dinner, soft classical music played from an antique phonograph in the corner of the living room. The triplets, exhausted from the day’s dramatic events, began dozing off on the large velvet sofa, wrapped together in a plush fleece blanket with Kaiser resting his heavy head across their feet. Claire stood near the tall bay window, looking out into the torrential rain falling over the courtyard. Adrien walked up behind her, placing a warm hands gently on her shoulders. Claire leaned back into his chest, letting out a long, weary sigh that she had held for six long years.

She turned around in his arms, looking up into his dark, handsome face. She asked him if this violent storm surrounding their lives would ever truly end, or if loving him meant forever living in the shadow of danger. Adrien looked down at her with profound tenderness, taking her hands in his. He spoke in a low, resonant voice, admitting that he could not change the dark heritage of his name, nor could he erase the violence of the world he commanded. But he swore that he would build a wall of steel around her and their daughters so strong that no storm could ever breach it.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a simple, delicate platinum ring set with a single brilliant sapphire—the exact ring he had bought six years ago before she disappeared from his life. He told her that he had carried it in his pocket every single day, waiting for the moment he could ask her to complete what was broken. He asked her to give their family a true chance, to let him be a real father to Lily, Sophie, and Emma, and to stand by his side as his wife. Claire looked at the sapphire shimmering in the candle light, tears shining in her eyes, as she prepared to give her answer while the storm raged outside.
