Chapter 16 - the midnight gala

The following evening, the atmosphere across Chicago reached a boiling point. Rather than remaining hidden behind the high walls of his estate, Adrien executed a bold, theatrical strategy designed to force his enemies into the open. He announced that the Moretti family would host the annual Chicago Heritage Charity Gala at the historic Plaza Ballroom in downtown Chicago. It was an exclusive black-tie event attended by the city’s elite politicians, high-society figures, and undercover syndicate leaders. By appearing in public, Adrien was making an unmistakable declaration of absolute dominance and supreme confidence.

The Plaza Ballroom was a masterpiece of crystal chandeliers, golden arches, and velvet drapes. High society hummed with hushed gossip as the heavy double doors opened, and Adrien Moretti stepped into the hall. He looked formidable in a bespoke black tuxedo, his presence commanding immediate, respectful silence from every corner of the room. Beside him was Claire, breathtakingly beautiful in a flowing emerald green satin gown, her hair swept up in an elegant vintage style secured with pearl pins. Behind them walked the triplets, wearing matching white lace party dresses with small green velvet sashes.

As Adrien led Claire through the crowded hall, introducing her to influential city figures as his future wife and the sole matriarch of the Moretti estate, tension crackled like static electricity in the air. Undercover Moretti operatives dressed in tuxedos stood near every exit, their eyes scanning the balconies. In the upper VIP lounge overlooking the dance floor, hidden behind dark tinted glass, sat Julian Vance—the cold-blooded head of the Vance syndicate who had orchestrated the bakery arson and bought Mark’s allegiance.

Julian Vance looked down at Adrien with venomous hatred, swirling a glass of red wine. He had expected Adrien to be cowering inside his fortress after the bakery attack; instead, Adrien was publicly displaying his new family to the entire world, demonstrating that the Vance syndicate's threats were nothing more than minor annoyances. Julian gestured to his chief enforcer standing in the shadows behind him, whispering that the moment the clock struck midnight and the fireworks began outside for the charity countdown, they would execute their final plan to tear the Moretti legacy apart.

Meanwhile, on the main floor, the triplets were captivated by the grand orchestra playing near the stage. Sophie kept her small notebook hidden inside a beaded purse, surreptitiously sketching the faces of suspicious men standing near the pillars. Emma held Adrien’s hand tightly as he spun Claire gently across the polished dance floor under the warm light of the chandeliers. For a brief hour, the world of violence seemed far away, but as the hands of the grand hall clock slowly approached twelve, Adrien felt the sharp hair on his neck stand on end.
