Chapter 8 - the pastel ribbons in the storm

Night fell over Chicago as a heavy rainstorm rolled off Lake Michigan, hammering against the high glass windows of the Lake Shore estate.

Inside the grand master suite, Claire sat on the edge of the large plush bed, brushing Lily’s long hair while Sophie and Emma sat on the rug, coloring in their books.

The heavy double doors opened, and Adrien walked inside. He had removed his suit jacket, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the neck, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms.

“The girls should be asleep,” Claire smiled gently, setting the hairbrush down.

Lily looked up brightly. “Daddy! Sophie gave you twenty points for making the mean man be quiet!”

Adrien let out a warm laugh, walking over to the bed and picking up all three girls in his broad arms, tossing them gently onto the soft mattress as they giggled merrily.

Claire watched the scene with a deep, radiant warmth filling her chest. The cold, terrifying Mafia Don had transformed into a devoted, loving father who spent his evenings playing with pastel ribbons and reading bedtime stories.

Suddenly, the lights across the entire mansion flickered violently before cutting out, plunging the room into dim emergency lighting!

Outside, the sharp crack of suppressed gunfire echoed from the lower gardens!

Claire gasped, her face going pale as she gathered the triplets behind her.

Adrien’s demeanor instantly shifted into lethal, predatory focus. He reached into his waistband, drawing his heavy silver revolver, and stepped in front of the bed.

“Marcus!” Adrien growled into his comms earpiece. “Report!”

“Boss! Rogue Valenti mercenaries breached the rear garden gate!” Marcus reported over static. “They’re pushing toward the east wing!”

“Lock down the panic room!” Adrien ordered.

He turned to Claire, gently guiding her and the triplets into the hidden steel-reinforced panic room concealed behind the walk-in closet.

“Stay inside, Claire,” Adrien murmured, looking into her eyes with fierce protection. “I’ll be right back.”

Emma reached out her small hand, touching his arm. “Keep your beige suit clean, Daddy.”

Adrien offered a sharp, confident smirk. “Always, little one.”
