Chapter 2 - the bakery on fifth street

Claire Bennett froze in the doorway of the private dining room, her hand clutching her small evening purse. Five years of exhaustion, early morning baking shifts, and fierce motherly devotion had not erased the striking beauty that had haunted Adrien Moretti’s memories every single night since a rainy Tuesday in Chicago five years ago.

Five years earlier, before Adrien took total control of the Moretti family, he had been ambushed in an alleyway behind a small bakery on Fifth Street. Bleeding and cornered, he had been saved by a gentle young baker who hid him in her kitchen storeroom, wrapped his wounds, and kept him safe until his men arrived. By the time he returned forty-eight hours later to thank her, the bakery was locked, and the young woman had vanished into thin air.

Claire looked at the tall man in the beige suit, her fair face going completely pale as recognition struck her like a lightning bolt.

“Adrien?” Claire whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

Lily scrambled out of her chair, running over to grab her mother’s hand. “Mommy! He passed the test! Sophie gave him eight points for having a dog!”

Adrien stood up slowly, his broad frame filling the room, his intense dark eyes never leaving Claire’s face. “You ran away five years ago, Claire.”

Claire pulled her daughters closer to her dress, her posture instantly becoming guarded and protective. “I didn't run away from you, Adrien. I ran away from the men who came looking for you the next morning.”

Adrien’s jaw set like iron. The realization hit his mind with the force of a thunderclap. Five years ago. Three identical five-year-old daughters.

He looked down at the triplets, then back at Claire, his deep voice dropping into a low, gravelly whisper. “You were pregnant when you left Chicago.”

Claire swallowed hard, her chin lifting with quiet, unyielding bravery. “I built a life for my daughters, Adrien. We don't need anything from the Moretti family.”

Adrien stepped around the table, stopping two feet from her. The terrifying Mafia boss who commanded an empire reached out with incredible gentleness, adjusting the pastel ribbon in Lily’s hair before looking Claire directly in the eyes.

“You don't owe me anything, Claire,” Adrien said softly. “But from this moment on, no one in this city will ever make you run again.”

Outside the restaurant, a sleek black sedan glided past the curb, its tinted windows lowering slightly as a camera lens clicked from the dark interior, capturing a photo of Claire and the triplets standing beside Adrien Moretti.
