Chapter 17 - Antonio’s Daughter

Probate court did not declare paternity because of a necklace.
Evidence package:
DNA consistent with Vincent and Isabella being half siblings.
Teresa’s sworn testimony regarding her relationship with Antonio.
Contemporaneous expense records placing them together during conception period.
Maria’s corroboration of relationship proximity and pendant.
Antonio’s personal journal? Avoid too convenient. But archive box contains a handwritten note? Maybe.
There was one letter from Antonio to Teresa found among her own stored papers.
Not romantic.
Dated two months before she left.
Teresa,
I have no right to ask trust from you after the way this family handled the audit. If there is anything personal we still need to resolve, I will meet where you choose, without staff.
Not paternity.
Evidence of relationship.
No other plausible Moretti parent.
My mother Lucia was biologically unrelated to Isabella.
Teresa had no relationship with my uncles.
The court accepted stipulated evidence because no interested party contested paternity and the trustee requested a formal finding.
Order:
Isabella Teresa Romano was declared biological daughter of the late Antonio Moretti for purposes of the trust and related estate rights.
Her legal surname remained Romano.
I asked:
“Do you want Moretti added?”
She looked at me like I had offered an elective surgery.
“No.”
“Fair.”
Maybe later?
Her choice.
She remained Isabella Romano.
The trust recognized her.
Back-distribution adjustment eventually fixed at $2.84 million gross before taxes and professional costs.
No suitcase of cash.
Independent trustee established an account.
Isabella hired her own financial adviser.
Not mine.
She used some money to return to college part time.
Paid Teresa’s medical debt? Some. She chose to help, but not all. Better boundaries.
She paid off her own student balance.
Built emergency savings.
Bought no mansion.
Kept her apartment for another year.
When people asked whether finding a billionaire brother changed her life, she answered:
“Mostly paperwork.”

I liked her more every week.
