Chapter 6 - The Pendant

Antonio gave Teresa the pendant before she left.

Not as a family recognition.

Not a secret marriage token.

An apology.

After Lorenzo threatened her, Antonio met Teresa in his office.

He took a silver pendant from a drawer.

Olive-branch crest.

Inside was a mechanical compartment.

He said:

“If anything happens to the records, this tells you where the duplicate set is.”

Teresa stared at him.

“Why jewelry?”

“Because Lorenzo watches files.”

“You sound insane.”

Antonio smiled.

“Probably.”

The secret compartment contained a tiny folded paper.

Not diamonds.

Not a bank key.

An archival reference:

BRS-4417

MOR/OLIVE

30Y HOLD

BRS stood for Beacon Records Storage.

A bonded commercial records company outside Boston.

Teresa had already arranged for duplicate accounting workpapers to be stored there because Moretti Consolidated was preparing for external financing.

Normal professional redundancy.

After Lorenzo’s threat, Antonio privately paid to extend retention on one sealed box for thirty years.

The box required:

Archive number.

Original custodian code.

Identification matching the authorized custodian list.

Teresa’s name was one.

Antonio’s was another.

He told her:

“If they alter the office files, the warehouse copy survives.”

Teresa asked:

“Who is they?”

Antonio answered:

“Anyone.”

That included himself.

For all his failures, Antonio understood one thing late.

Records should exist somewhere the family did not control.

When Teresa fled, she kept the pendant.

Never opened the compartment again after moving.

Why?

“If I opened it, I would think about going back.”

The thirty-year retention period had two years remaining.

That fact chilled everyone.

Not because fate arranged the gala.

Because records contracts have expiration dates.

Teresa had nearly let the box be destroyed through ordinary retention policy.

Isabella’s accidental appearance at Belladonna happened before that.

No prophecy.

Administrative coincidence.

The day after the gala, Dana Whitcomb contacted Beacon Records Storage’s successor company.

The original firm had been acquired twice.

The archive number still existed.

One sealed carton.

Never retrieved.

No need for Vincent Moretti’s private men to break locks.

Teresa, as listed custodian, could request release after identity verification.

She did.

We arranged for the box to go directly to independent counsel.

Chain of custody documented.

Everyone signed.

Boring.

May you like

Perfect.
