Chapter 7 - Maria Santos

Maria had seen more than Teresa knew.

In 1998 Maria was thirty-nine.

Assistant household manager.

She did not work in accounting.

She worked around people who believed service staff became furniture.

That is how she heard things.

One night she saw Lorenzo Moretti enter Antonio’s study with Leonard DeMarco.

Voices rose.

Antonio:

“You used my company to solve your liquidity problem.”

Lorenzo:

“It was temporary.”

Leonard:

“The bank doesn’t need family drama.”

Antonio:

“The bank gets accurate numbers.”

Maria remembered those words because Antonio rarely sounded frightened.

That night he did.

Then she saw Teresa leaving the accounting room carrying two archive envelopes.

Lorenzo followed.

Maria heard:

“You sign the clean schedule or you walk.”

Teresa answered:

“I’ll walk.”

The next week she did.

Maria assumed Antonio had fired her.

Years later Antonio told Maria something strange while drunk after dinner.

“I lost the only accountant who ever told me the truth before I asked.”

Maria said:

“Call her.”

Antonio answered:

“She doesn’t want to be found.”

That line mattered.

He had tried.

Then respected the refusal eventually.

Maria did not know Teresa was pregnant.

Did not know Isabella existed.

She retired before Vivian entered my life.

Why did Maria react so strongly to the pendant?

She had seen Antonio place it around Teresa’s neck once during a private office moment.

Not romantic.

He said:

“Keep the receipt safe.”

Maria thought it was strange.

She remembered.

Twenty-eight years later, objects can outlive context.

Her testimony alone could not prove financial misconduct.

The sealed archive might.

Her testimony did something else.

It prevented my family from rewriting Teresa as a disgruntled maid.

Vivian had already started doing that at the gala.

Maria’s sentence:

“Teresa wasn’t a servant.”

was not about class pride.

It was about credibility.

Teresa had been a professional.

An accountant.

A person whose work mattered.

That distinction became central once the press arrived.
