Chapter 23 - The Trust Money

Isabella received the first corrected distribution eighteen months after the gala.
Not immediately.
Tax review.
Probate order.
Trustee accounting.
Professional fees.
Her net after taxes and adjustments was substantial.
She refused to tell the press.
Good.
She told me what she planned only because we were becoming siblings.
“College.”
She returned to finish accounting.
Of course.
I laughed.
“What?”
“Antonio’s daughter.”
“Don’t.”
“Sorry.”
She finished a bachelor’s degree over two years while working part time in nonprofit finance.
Not at Moretti Group.
I offered one interview.
She refused.
“Everyone would think you hired me because blood.”
“They would.”
“Exactly.”
Good judgment.
She used part of the trust adjustment to buy a two-bedroom condominium outside Boston.
Modest.
No mansion.
Teresa moved nearby, not in.
Boundaries.
She created a small emergency fund.
Donated a limited amount to the legal clinic that represented her.
No grand foundation named after herself.
The ongoing annual trust distributions became part of her financial life, managed with independent advice.
I did not know exact balances.
That was healthy.
My own prior excess distributions?
Trust accounting adjusted future allocations.
I repaid a small portion of tax-related overpayment directly to trust after counsel recommendation.
No guilt payment.
Process.
The system corrected.
Slowly.

That was better than me writing a dramatic check across a desk.
