Chapter 26 - The Shoes

Three years after the gala, Isabella attended a Moretti Foundation dinner.
Not as staff.
Not as surprise heir.
As herself.
She wore a dark green dress.
The silver pendant.
Teresa came.
Maria too.
I stood near the ballroom entrance.
Same marble.
Different event.
Smaller.
No riding crops in charity displays.
We had learned one operational lesson at least.
A server carrying red wine caught her heel on the edge of a rug.
Tray tilted.
One glass spilled.
Across Isabella’s shoes.
The young server froze.
“I’m so sorry.”
The entire old scene flashed through me.
Vivian.
Crop.
Clean my shoes.
I moved automatically.
Then stopped.
Not my incident.
Isabella looked down.
Red wine.
She laughed.
“It’s fine.”
The server looked terrified.
“I can get—”
“Napkins?”
“Yes.”
“Perfect.”
She crouched.
Then paused.
Looked at the server.
“You don’t have to clean my shoes.”
The young woman almost cried from relief.
Isabella took the napkins.
Cleaned them herself.
Maria watched from ten feet away.
Her eyes filled.
Teresa saw.
So did I.
No one made a speech.
Later I asked Isabella:
“Did that bother you?”
“Yes.”
“Want to leave?”
“No.”
“Want different shoes?”
“No.”
Then:
“They’re shoes, Vincent.”
There.
Three years earlier Vivian used service to tell Isabella where she belonged.
Now Isabella could receive service without turning another person into someone beneath her.
That was reclamation.
Quiet.
May you like
Better than revenge.
