Chapter 19 - No One Goes to Jail

There was no criminal prosecution of Thomasin for tearing the album.

The album had little market value.

Emotionally priceless does not automatically create a felony.

No assault on Lowri.

No theft of major property.

The reunion incident stayed primarily a family and civil matter.

My broken portrait?

I reimbursed Thomasin for the frame and documented urgent-care expenses after her fall.

No lawsuit followed.

I enrolled in a structured anger-management course and continued therapy.

Not court ordered.

Lowri said:

“Daddy broke picture because mad.”

I wanted the next sentence in her mind to be:

Daddy learned not to break things because mad.

Not:

That’s what strong people do.

Thomasin faced consequences elsewhere.

Engagement ended.

No contact with Lowri.

She moved her belongings out through a scheduled third-party pickup.

She did not lose her job.

Did not become homeless.

Did not get socially exiled from Boston.

Some friends supported her.

Some did not.

Life continued.

Beatrice’s court petition remained.

Family evaluation.

No criminal case.

Again:

psychological control is not always criminal.

That does not make it harmless.

The school changed procedure.

Emergency contacts could not alter bereavement or counseling instructions without parent/guardian confirmation.

Therapist recommendations had to come directly from clinician where applicable.

Not because Beatrice committed educational fraud.

Because assumptions had failed.

Miriam updated consent structure.

Only me and designated legal guardian? Me.

If another caregiver attended, summaries could not be represented as treatment directives without written parent permission.

Small process.

Big difference.

Systems improve through boring paperwork.

Our family needed a lot of boring paperwork.
