Chapter 19 - silent river

Ethan turned around slowly on the narrow bridge, keeping his body positioned between Richard's gun and the far shore where Nora and Lily were standing.

"You were never a gentleman, Richard," Ethan said, his voice cold and devoid of fear. "Our father knew you were stealing from the firm thirty years ago. That's why he left the voting shares to Julian and me."

Richard's face contorted into a bitter, ugly sneer. "Your father was a fool who lacked the courage to expand! I built this company into a global empire!"

"You built it on blood," I said, stepping up beside Ethan on the slippery timber planks. "And tonight, it ends."

Richard's finger tightened on the trigger. "Shoot them both," he ordered his guards.

Before the gunmen could raise their weapons, the loud, high-pitched wail of multiple police sirens echoed from the main road above the woods, followed by the roar of a low-flying state police helicopter sweeping a massive white searchlight across the river canopy.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!" a voice boomed over the helicopter's loudspeaker.

The bright searchlight blinded Richard and his men, pinning them in brilliant white glare. Panic erupted among the guards, who dropped their weapons and raised their hands in the air.

Richard glared at us through the blinding light, his face twisted in pure rage. Instead of dropping his gun, he aimed it directly at Ethan's head.

A single sharp rifle crack echoed from the helicopter above. Richard gasped, dropping his pistol as he collapsed onto the muddy bank.
