Chapter 6 - the vault in manhattan

By 8:00 AM the following morning, a heavy snowstorm was blowing across New York City. A convoy of three black armored SUVs, escorted by Daniel’s private security detail, pulled up outside the grand stone steps of Manhattan Central Bank.

Daniel stepped out of the lead vehicle, dressed in a sharp navy wool coat over his beige suit. He held Maya in one arm, keeping her warm under his coat, while Grace walked beside him, protected from the icy wind by Marcus.

Inside the private subterranean vault of the bank, the heavy iron door groaned open. A senior bank manager bowed respectfully to Daniel, leading them to safe-deposit box 402.

Daniel inserted the silver key he had pulled from the teddy bear. With a heavy mechanical click, the steel box unlocked and slid out from the wall.

Daniel carried the heavy metallic box over to a private viewing table. Grace stood beside him, holding Maya’s small hand, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Daniel lifted the metal lid.

Inside the box lay a thick stack of legal documents tied with a red ribbon, a small digital voice recorder, and an official state marriage certificate.

Daniel picked up the marriage certificate first. Unfolding it, he read the dark ink aloud: State of New York — Official Marriage License between Julian Arthur Whitfield and Grace Eleanor Bennett.

Grace let out a ragged breath, tears streaming down her face. "He really was Julian... he truly loved me."

"He did," Daniel said gently, handing her the official document. "This makes your marriage completely legal under state law, Grace. You were his lawful wife."

Daniel then reached for the stack of legal papers. It was Julian’s last will and testament, drafted four weeks before his disappearance. Under the clear terms of the will, Julian had officially bequeathed his entire 40% voting share in Whitfield Enterprises—a stake worth over two billion dollars—to his legal child, Maya Bennett Whitfield, with Grace appointed as the sole trustee.

"My God..." Grace whispered, stunned by the sheer magnitude of the wealth. "I had no idea..."

"There's one more thing," Daniel said, picking up the small digital voice recorder. He pressed the black play button.

The speaker crackled with static for a second before a familiar, deep male voice filled the quiet vault—Julian's voice.

"Daniel," Julian’s voice recorded message began, sounding breathless and urgent. "If you are listening to this tape, it means my fear came true and I am dead. I discovered six months ago that someone inside our family has been illegally siphoning tens of millions of dollars from the Whitfield Charitable Foundation into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands. When I threatened to go to the federal authorities, my car brakes were cut. I survived, but I had to disappear to protect Grace and my unborn child. The person stealing from us... is Diana."
