Chapter 5 - the key in the lining

"Get away from her!" Grace screamed, leaping out of bed and shoving the intruder with all her strength.

The intruder stumbled back, startled by Grace's fierce defense, but quickly recovered, grabbing Grace by the wrist and forcing her toward the wall. Maya woke up with a sharp cry, clutching her bear to her chest.

Before the intruder could snatch the toy, the heavy bedroom door was kicked open with a thunderous crash.

Daniel burst into the room, his beige suit jacket gone, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar. Moving with terrifying speed and broad-shouldered power, Daniel tackled the intruder away from Grace, slamming him against the marble mantlepiece.

The intruder groaned, dropping a small metal lock-picking tool onto the floor. Daniel threw a heavy right hook, knocking the man's mask loose, but the intruder managed to kick Daniel's knee, scrambling over the balcony railing and disappearing into the snowy darkness of the gardens below.

"Daniel!" Grace cried out, holding Maya in her arms as security alarms began blaring across the mansion.

Marcus and three armed guards rushed into the room, weapons drawn. "Mr. Whitfield! Are you alright?"

"Pursue him! Lock down the perimeter grounds now!" Daniel ordered, his breathing heavy, his chest heaving as he straightened his white shirt.

"Yes, sir!" Marcus yelled, turning to dispatch his team into the gardens.

Daniel turned to Grace and Maya, checking them both for any harm. "Are you two hurt?"

"We're fine," Grace sobbed, holding Maya tightly. "Daniel... why would someone break in here? What could a burglar possibly want from a maid's guest room?"

Daniel looked down at the floor near the bed. Sitting in the center of the rug was the worn brown teddy bear.

Daniel picked up the toy, his sharp eyes examining every inch of it under the chandelier light. "He wasn't looking for jewelry or money, Grace. He was coming specifically for this bear."

"The bear?" Grace gasped. "Why?"

Daniel brought the toy over to his desk lamp on the side table. He squeezed the stuffed bear's body, feeling past the cotton filling. Near the seam of the left leg—right beneath the blue star patch—his fingers felt something hard, thin, and rectangular tucked deep inside the stuffing.

"Grace," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a low whisper. "Do you have a pair of scissors?"

Grace quickly retrieved a small pair of sewing scissors from her travel bag. Daniel carefully snipped the blue thread along the back seam of the bear's foot. He reached his fingers deep inside the cotton interior.

When he pulled his hand out, he was holding a small, silver safety-deposit key stamped with a three-digit number: 402.

Wrapped around the metal key was a tightly folded piece of waterproof paper, covered in Julian's distinct handwriting.
