Chapter 9 - the lullaby in the snow

By noon the following day, the Whitfield private jet landed at Geneva Airport amidst a sweeping alpine blizzard. A motorcade of black luxury sedans sped through the winding snow-dusted mountain roads toward the secluded Alpine Rest Sanatorium.
Inside the lead car, Daniel sat with Grace and little Maya. Grace clutched Maya close to her chest, her heart beating frantically with hope and fear.
"Is it really him, Daniel?" Grace asked, her voice cracking with emotion. "Could he truly be alive?"
"We are going to find out right now," Daniel said, holding Grace's hand gently to steady her trembling.
The motorcade pulled up to the grand stone gates of the sanatorium. Daniel, Grace, and Maya were escorted through the warm, quiet medical corridors by the chief Swiss physician, Dr. Keller.
They reached the top floor, stopping outside a quiet room with a glass viewing window overlooking the snowy mountain peaks.
Dr. Keller unlocked the wooden door, stepping aside. "He has lived here quietly for four years, Mr. Whitfield. He lost his long-term memory due to head trauma. He spends his days looking out at the mountains, painting wooden figures."
Grace stepped into the room first, her breath catching in her throat.
Sitting by the window in a soft gray wool sweater was a tall man with dark hair flecked with gray. He was carving a small wooden bird with a dull knife, his pale, handsome face looking calm yet distant.
It was Julian.
Grace took a slow, agonizing step forward. "Julian...?" she whispered softly.
The man didn't react to the name. He continued carving his wood, staring out at the snow.
Tears streamed down Grace's face as she dropped to her knees beside his chair. "Luke... please look at me..."
Julian paused his knife slightly, but his eyes remained hazy and blank, clouded by years of psychological trauma and memory loss.
Little Maya stepped out from behind Daniel's coat. Dressed in her red coat, holding her worn brown teddy bear with the blue star patch, she walked over to the seated man.
Maya reached out her tiny hand, gently resting her small palm on Julian's knee.
She looked up at his face and began to hum a sweet, slow lullaby—the exact lullaby Grace used to sing to her every night before sleep.
Julian froze.
Slowly, his head turned down toward the child. His dark eyes locked onto the blue star patch on the brown teddy bear resting in her small arms.
A sudden, powerful spark ignited in Julian's eyes. The hazy fog of amnesia cracked open. His breath hitched sharply, his hands trembling as he dropped his carving tool onto the carpet.
"The... the star bear..." Julian choked out, his voice raspy and raw. Slowly, his eyes lifted to Grace's tear-streaked face. "Grace...? Grace, my love...?"
May you like
Grace let out a loud, broken sob, throwing her arms around Julian's neck as he wrapped his powerful arms around her and his little girl, weeping tears of profound, miracle-filled joy.
Daniel stood by the door, tears falling silently down his face as he watched his brother come home at last.
