Chapter 7 - the truth in the ballroom

The atmosphere inside the vault turned ice-cold.
Grace gasped, her hand covering her mouth in total shock. "Diana?"
Daniel’s jaw set into a rigid line of pure, unadulterated fury. The dark puzzle was finally complete. Diana hadn't just disliked Grace because she was a maid; Diana had been terrified that Julian's return—or the discovery of his heir—would expose her massive financial crimes and strip her of her luxurious lifestyle.
"Marcus," Daniel commanded flatly, his deep voice vibrating with absolute lethality. "Call the state police. Have them meet us at the estate in thirty minutes."
By 10:30 AM, the convoy returned to the Whitfield estate.
Daniel pushed open the heavy oak doors of the grand ballroom. The Christmas decorations still hung from the ceiling, but the festive cheer was long gone.
Sitting near the fireplace was Eleanor, looking pale and worried. Standing near the tall glass windows was Diana, wearing a sweeping cream silk dress, sipping a cup of tea.
As Daniel stepped into the ballroom flanked by two armed state troopers and Marcus, Diana dropped her porcelain teacup. It shattered against the marble floor.
"Daniel! What is the meaning of this?" Diana demanded, stepping back in panic. "Why are there police in the house?"
Daniel walked to the center of the room, tossing the stack of bank ledgers and the marriage certificate onto the long mahogany table.
"It’s over, Diana," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "We opened box 402 this morning."
Eleanor stood up from her chair, her eyes wide with shock. "Box 402? What are you talking about, Daniel?"
"Four years ago, Julian discovered that Diana was embezzling millions from our family foundation," Daniel revealed, looking directly at Diana's pale face. "When Julian threatened to report her, Diana had his car brakes tampered with, forcing him to flee for his life under an assumed name. And last night, Diana sent her personal assistant to steal Maya's bear because she knew Julian hid the key inside it."
"That's a lie!" Diana screamed, her voice cracking hysterically as she backed toward the windows. "He’s making this up! You can't prove anything!"
Daniel pressed play on the digital recorder in his hand. Julian's clear, recorded voice filled the grand ballroom, explicitly detailing Diana's offshore bank account numbers and her threats against his life.
Eleanor gasped, falling back into her armchair, covering her face in devastating grief. "Diana... how could you? He was your brother-in-law!"
The senior state trooper stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Diana Whitfield, you are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and attempted murder."

"Get your hands off me!" Diana shrieked as the officer snapped the cold metal around her wrists, dragging her out of the grand ballroom toward the waiting police cruisers. "Daniel, please! You can't do this to family!"
"You destroyed my brother's life," Daniel said coldly, turning his back on her as the heavy doors slammed shut.
